Spaying or neutering is one of the best things you can do for your pet, your family, and the community.


Spaying or neutering your pet will prevent them from having offspring, which will help with pet overpopulation. Pet overpopulation is a huge problem around the world, and leads to approximately 3 to 4 million animals being euthanized in the United States every year. In Virginia alone, 100,000 animals in shelters were killed last year. Many of these pets were euthanized because shelters simply do not have enough resources to care for them all. Over the course of a few years, a pet and her offspring can give birth to hundreds of animals. There are just too many animals born. The only way to stop this cycle is to have your pet spayed or neutered. Spaying and neutering saves lives!


The obvious health benefit of spaying your pet is the avoidance of health issues associated with pregnancy and recovery. Spaying can result in reduced or eliminated risk of ovarian cancer, uterine cancer, and mammary gland tumors. Neutering eliminates the risk for testicular cancer and decreases the risk of developing prostate disease. Pets who are spayed or neutered generally live longer, healthier lives. Spaying or neutering a dog on average increases their life span by approximately one to three years. A spayed or neutered cat enjoys an average increase of three to five years.


Spaying and neutering can also positively alter your pet's behavior by reducing or eliminating spraying, running away in search for a mate, and howling. In addition, there is no mess to clean up associated with a pet being in heat. Pets who have been spayed or neutered are often less aggressive, calmer, and more affectionate. They are also less likely to bite, as unneutered dogs are responsible for 60 to 80 percent of all dog bites. Female dogs with puppies also have an increased incidence of biting.
