Humane Campaign

The Humane Campaign has officially hit the streets and the airwaves. Our commercials have also aired on cable channels such as CNN, FOX, HGTV, BET, ESPN, TNT, Discovery, and others. The Humane Campaign focuses on the issues you've told us were important:

  • Adoption
  • Spay/Neuter
  • Unchaining of Dogs

Humane Education

The Suffolk Humane Society Humane Education Department brings presentations to the community and schools about pet care, humane treatment of animals and compassion and empathy for all living things. We have developed lesson plans that correlate with Virginia Standards of Learning for school aged children. Our lesson plans are available for teachers to use in the classroom or a humane education volunteer can present the lesson in your classroom!

The BARKS Program (Books and Reading for Kids in Suffolk) is a program where children read one on one to a therapy dog and their handler in a non-threatening environment. Therapy dogs are utilized because they are non-judgmental listeners and your child will feel confident while reading to a furry friend! To learn more about the BARKS Program, click here.

The Suffolk Humane Society recently involved Suffolk City Schools in the third annual district wide ART Contest promoting kindness to animals. Students, grades Kindergarten through 12, were asked to create an original two-dimensional or three-dimensional artwork or digital photograph that illustrates how to be kind to animals. The Suffolk Humane Society wanted to provide students the opportunity to express themselves creatively, receive positive recognition for original works, and increase community awareness on the importance of caring for animals. The art contest was a huge success!

We are currently conducting a pilot program with KIND News in three schools in Suffolk (Kilby Shores, Creekside and Robertson Elementary schools). In October 2009, we also provided books to elementary schools in Suffolk. We donated two books to each library - "Let's Get a Pup! Said Kate" and "Go Home! The True Story of James the Cat".

The Humane Education Department has compiled a list of our favorite books! Check out a book that relates to compassion and kindness for you child or for yourself!

Our program is flexible and diverse - we welcome your input! Please contact us at for more information!
